Part-Time Heroes 'Holy' by Ben Collier-Marsh

David Knight - 10th Jan 2013

Ben Collier-Marsh, creative director of Radiant Studios, has created this brilliant, mesmerising 3D version of an orrery – a mechanical device that illustrates the relative positions and motions of the planets and moons in the solar system (thanks Wikipedia…) – to accompany jazz-electronic duo Part-Time Heroes’ delightful Holy. It is pristinely beautiful, and quite magical.

“The track is heavily textured and had an element of looping so I initially started researching gyroscopes and objects that looped,” says Ben. “Then I discovered this beautiful old orrery on youtube which became the inspiration for the piece.

“There is so much geometry in the project it became quite mind bending to build. I wanted the finish to be glossy so I couldn’t really cut any corners and didn’t want to. The piece was created in Cinema 4D and After Effects and took 10-15 minutes per frame to render and the piece is 5000 frames.” That’s 35 days of rendering to be precise. And this is certainly precise.
