Colin Tilley accepted the Video Of The Year award for his video for Kendrick Lamar's Alright (above), David Wilson picked up the Best Director award, and the music video legend David Mallet accepted the MVAs' annual Icon Award, at the eighth running of the UK Music Video Awards, the annual ceremony celebrating the most creative work and greatest achievements in music video of the past year, in London last Thursday (November 5th). The night, hosted by Adam Buxton, began with a mesmerizing dance performance and ended in a cloud of confetti, with over 30 awards handed out in between. Nominees also came from far and wide - including Paris, Tel Aviv, Montreal and Los Angeles - to attend a glittering celebration of the artistry of music videos, the biggest UKMVA ceremony so far, held at legendary London music venue The Roundhouse for the first time.It was a big night of success for British director David Wilson. As well as scooping the Best Director honour (below), his video for Royal Blood's Out Of The Black won three awards, for Best Rock/Indie Video UK, Best Animation In A Video - accepted by Wilson on behalf of the team of animators led by the video's co-director Christy Karacas, and Best Editing in a Video, which went to Max Windows at Stitch. Wilson's excitement did not end there, with him also winning Best Rock/Indie Video - International, for Tame Impala's Let It Happen. Photography: Ben MeadowsThe other big winner on the night was Kendrick Lamar's video for Alright, directed by Colin Tilley, which won Video of the Year, as well as Best International Urban Video, and had DoPs Corey Jennings & Rob Witt winning Best Cinematography in a Video.Having arrived from LA just a few hours earlier to attend the UK Music Video Awards ceremony, in his acceptance speech for the Video Of The Year prize, Colin Tilley (below) opened up about his belief in directors' responsibility to make important contributions to pop culture.Another big winner on the night was Helmi, whose video for Tiga's Bugatti won two prizes - Best Art Direction in a Video, and Best Dance Video - International, before Helmi then won the award for Best New Director.Of the other main Individual prizes, two longstanding members of the British music video industry won awards for the first time: James Hackett, head of music video at Virgin EMI, took the Best Commissioner award; and Sarah Tognazzi (below) won the Best Producer prize.Hiro Murai, last year's Best Director winner, returned to the UKMVAs to pick up the award for Best Alternative Video - International, for his video for Flying Lotus ft Kendrick Lamar's Never Catch Me. Flying Lotus also won the Best Artist Award - and Steven Ellison (aka 'FlyLo') sent a last-minute video message (pictured below) to the packed house at The Roundhouse: a few seconds of his face superimposed on a female body, and letting the audience know that he was happy that the UKMVAs liked his "body of work."Other videos were sent by choreographer Ryan Heffington, accepting the Best Choreography in a Video award for Sia's Elastic Heart, and director Nathan Johnson for Son Lux 'Change Is Everything,' which saw him in the middle of animating a 'Thank You' message which he reckoned might be finished next year.In the best of British videos, the award for Best Dance Video UK went to Casey Raymond and Ewan Jones Morris for Leftfield & Sleaford Mods' Head And Shoulders; French directing duo Truman & Cooper won Best Urban Video UK for 'Rag N Bone Man Ft Vince Staples' Hell Yeah. Best Alternative Video UK went to Jack Whiteley for The Staves' Black & White.The award for Best Pop Video UK went to one of the most viewed videos of the past year: Mark Ronson's Uptown Funk, featuring Bruno Mars, directed by Cameron Duddy & Bruno Mars. The award waspresented by Rushes' MD Joss Capper to Sony Music head of music video Mike O'Keefe (below), with Duddy sending a video message.The video for Rihanna's Bitch, Better Have My Money, directed by Megaforce, also won two awards: Best Pop Video International, and Best Styling In A Video for stylist Mel Ottenberg. Other prizes for technical achievement included the Best Colour Grading award for Aubrey Woodiwiss, winning the award for the third time, for his grading on Rudimental's Never Let You Go video. Best VFX in a Video went to Yoann Lemoine, who directed and did the effects for Black Atlass' Jewels.Dent de Cuir took home the first-ever MVA award for Best Lyric Video, for The Shoes 'Feed The Ghost,' and the director Denny Tedesco won the first MVA award for Best Music Documentary, for his years-in-the-making doc The Wrecking Crew. Paul Dugdale's won Best Live Coverage for his Lenny Kravitz concert feature Just Let Go. And for the second year in a row, Vania Heymann won Best Interactive video, this time for Cee Lo Green's Robin Williams.In the Best Video - Budget categories, Us won Best Urban Video for Dels' Burning Beaches, Romain Chassaing won Best Rock/Indie Video for Naive New Beaters' Run Away, Best Dance went to R113's Lorn's Acid Rain, and Eoin Glaister was awarded Best Pop Video on a budget, for Aquilo's Losing You.The night began with a beautiful dance piece choreographed by MVA Best Choreography in a Video nominee Holly Blakey. Then Adam Buxton - presenting his seventh UKMVA ceremony - began the show proper with an opening monologue featuring his usual video-assisted wit - which included a reading of YouTube comments from the video for David Bowie's Let's Dance, directed by the UKMVAs Icon Award recipient David Mallet.Later in the show, Promo News editor and UKMVAs editorial director David Knight introduced a short film that summarized Mallet's extraordinary career, which began in the 1960s working in pop TV, before he helped invent the music video medium as we know it in the 1970s and 80s, working with Bowie, Queen, Blondie, Tina Turner, The Boomtown Rats, and many more. The film also contained messages of congratulations from Tina Turner, Billy Idol, Kevin Godley, Hamish Hamilton, Arlene Phillips and Sir Bob Geldof.
