When small pets start going missing from the neighbourhood, Cavetown (aka Robin Skinner) plays amateur sleuth - and gets caught up in an unfolding injustice - in Lewis Cater’s riveting video for Ur Gonna Wish U Believed Me.Switching between a courtroom scene - where Cavetown is the defendant - and the events that preceded it, Cater makes an utterly absorbing drama from this small yet timely story. Cavetown pleads his case to the stern magistrate on the bench by performing the song, and the prosecutor and shifty pet shop owner - claiming ownership of the pets - invert the truth and falsely accuse him of theft. With taught directing and editing, Lewis Cater creates a new take on the classic scenario of the individual unjustly caught on the grinding wheels of justice and establishment power. It’s also a great showcase for an intriguing artist and their song, reminiscent of another much-missed underdog, Elliott Smith. A terrific video.
