The Hackney Colliery Band 'Rolling In The Deep' by Nick Scott

Jimmy Brown - 17th Dec 2013

Nick Scott gets up close with The Hackney Colliery Band - who performed at the London Olympics 2012 closing ceremony - in his unusual split-screen promo for their rendition of Adele's Rolling In The Deep.

Shot at the Hoxton Hall in October, Nick, together with Golden Sq VFX artist Matt Stevens, strapped GoPro cameras to each instrument to give a unique view of the action.

Matt explains: "We researched where each camera should go on which instrument – for example the best place on the trombone was to position it on the slider, whereas for the cameras on the two drummers we put one on a drumstick and one as a head-cam. It was a slightly experimental approach, and so we were very pleased with the footage that we captured on the night.

"Altogether we filmed eight different instruments/musicians, using eight Go-Pros and three DSLRs. The editor Gareth C Scales synced the footage of all eight cameras, then roughly set the size and position of each instrument’s footage, creating a multi-channel edit in Final Cut. I then took the cut into After Effects, refined the spacing and worked on the look of the boxes in the video. We went for something that echoes Saul Bass, which ties in with the style of the band’s album artwork.

"I graded the selected shots for each instrument, which was quite a challenge due to the nature of the footage, as it contained a lot of movement and varying stage lighting, and also due to time pressure as we had just two nights to complete the video.

"Meanwhile Ben Gulvin @ 750mph mixed various live feeds from the night with a studio recording of the track. This gave us the opportunity to bring up individual instrument solos, to help the viewer realise which part of the multi-channel edit syncs with which sound.”

“I'm very grateful to the creative team at Golden Sq who have been incredibly supportive of my work over the years. They always bring their own skills and talents to the job.

Matt Stevens has been a great long-time collaborator, and always elevates the original idea with his creative direction and post work. Hackney Colliery Band is a fantastically vibrant group of musicians. Seeing them live is an amazing experience. We wanted to try and do justice to that experience, and also visually unpick the way they arrange their music.”
