Nikolai Galitzine has directed and shot this tale of a doomed London gangster taking a bad turn in the boxing game for the rampaging mod-rock of The Deets’ Charlie.

Nikolai Galitzine has directed and shot this tale of a doomed London gangster taking a bad turn in the boxing game for the rampaging mod-rock of The Deets’ Charlie. “The Deets’ music video takes it’s inspiration from Jules Dassin’s classic film noir Night & The City (1950) with Richard Widmark playing a low life wrestling manager who gets in trouble with the London underworld. As an exercise, the film was cut to fit the track, and instead of wrestling, scenes from Raging Bull were substituted. It worked far too well and the band loved what they saw. “The next hurdle was to try to recreate it on a shoestring. The key element was to find boxers and a gym that would look the part. First stop Repton Boys Club in Bethnal Green which has hosted many films, including Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels. The authentic decor and enthusiastic local boxers Simon Lewis and Bobby Foreman sealed the deal. With a skeleton crew and a trusty 5Dmk2, Charlie was shot over three days: Repton, Limehouse, Hammersmith and Netil House for the studio performance shots.”
