Fujiko Nakaya x Min Tanaka x Ryuichi Sakamoto by Ilona McIlwain

Fujiko Nakaya x Min Tanaka x Ryuichi Sakamoto by Ilona McIlwain

David Knight - 20th Apr 2017

Fujiko Nakaya's remarkable 'fog sculpture' called London Fog, recently exhibiting at London's Tate Modern and experienced by thousands of visitors, has inspired a mesmerising short film - the directing debut of Ilona McIlwain.

It features the compelling 72 year old Japanese actor and performer Min Tanaka, responding to the enveloping mists of London Fog with a display of controlled physicality and emotion that has your heart beating a little faster.

The impact is intensified by the lighting effects of Shiro Takatani from Japanese art collective Dumb Type, and a searing, minimalist soundtrack by Ryuichi Sakamoto - composer of the scores for The Revenant and Ghost In The Shell. The overall effect is stylishly cinematic - almost Kurasawa-like in its simple intensity.
