Grimes develops her signature visual style even further in this self-directed hyper-stylised collage video for Venus Fly, guest-starring Janelle Monáe.
Crammed full of fairytale and mythological imagery, with a futuristic maximalism to boot, the clip is a visual feast that takes a few viewings to fully digest. Dreamlike, paranoid shifts in setting and incredible costume and visual effects really tie together a very disparate, intense music video experience. And get the feeling that the stunned look on Janelle Monáe's face may not be just acting.
Much of the dreamlike quality comes from the action being shot at very high frame rates on the Phantom and Grimes has said "we used the Phantom cameras to create a feeling of time suspended." Even so, this seven minute video whizzes by almost too quickly. Grimes can't be accused of being boring, and she is getting the hang of directing.
