Karni & Saul, the BAFTA-nominated directing duo known for creating fantasy worlds in different animation styles and live action, have signed to RSA Films and its music video division Black Dog Films for UK representation for commercials and music promos.
Karni Arieli and Saul Freed have worked together since 2002, and directed ads for Sainsbury's, Maynard's and others. From the start of their careers they have also employed animation and photography to weave charming narrative videos - what they call "casual fantasies" – for a select group of artists including The Staves, Micha P Hinson, Beth Orton and Flogging Molly.
Their most recent video for Katie Melua's Perfect World was released late last year: a tale of a mother and child's adventure in a winter wonderland made of sugar, created in CGI.
In 2010 Karni & Saul showcased their short film Turning, a story of a magical afternoon with a boy and three huge birds. The film screened at festivals worldwide before being nominated for a BAFTA in 2011. Their second short film Flytopia (2012), commissioned by Film4 and based on a dark fantastical Will Self story, was also a hit on the festival circuit winning several awards.
"We are thrilled to join the RSA & Black Dog Films family," say Karni & Saul, who are currently developing an animated children’s series as well as writing two features and a couple of kid’s books. "They are the perfect home for our mixed media fantasy work, and we are looking forward to producing some beautiful exciting pieces together."
Melody Sylvester, executive producer at RSA, adds: “I’m so happy to welcome Karni and Saul to RSA. Their experience across animation and moving image is a welcome addition to the Design and Animation roster.”
