It is very sad to report that Darrell Cooke, the production designer who worked prolifically in UK music video production in the Nineties and early 2000s, has passed away. Darrell died last Wednesday (22nd May) after a courageous battle against cancer. He was just 39 years old.

It is very sad to report that Darrell Cooke, the production designer who worked prolifically in UK music video production in the Nineties and early 2000s, has passed away. Darrell died last Wednesday (22nd May) after a courageous battle against cancer. He was just 39 years old. From around the mid Nineties to the early 2000s, Darrell art directed dozens of music videos, as one of the mainstays of Function Design, for the likes of U2, Oasis, Spice Girls, Girls Aloud, Skunk Anansie, Stereophonics, and many more. In that period he also worked with many of the top directors working in the medium, including Jamie Thraves, Andy Morahan, Julien Temple, Phil Griffin and Jake Nava. Darrell began to make his mark in UK music videos shortly after graduating from Central St Martins School Of Art with a 2:1 in Theatre Design in 1995. From that area of filmmaking he then went on to be the UK production designer on Olly Blackburn’s first feature Donkey Punch, having art directed Olly’s short film Wonderful World. From the early 2000s onwards he began to focus mainly as a production designer in commercials, working on ads for Dyson, L’Oreal, Homebase, Santander and Haagen Dasz. Darrell’s funeral will take place this Thursday, 30th May at 11.30am, at Crownhill Crematorium, Dansteed Way, Crownhill, Milton Keynes, MK8 0AH. It will be followed at 12.30pm by a memorial service to celebrate Darrell’s life at the Sculpture Gallery at nearby Woburn Abbey. All of his many friends from his music video-making days are welcome to join his wife Clare and his family in celebrating the life of Darrell Cooke.
